The sampling site at Syowa is operated in cooperation with the National Institute of Polar Research. The first NOAA/CMDL flask air samples from Syowa were collected in 1986. The annual atmospheric CO2 mixing ratio at Syowa rose from 349.42 parts per million (ppm) in 1988 to 370.75 ppm in 2002.
